The painting of The Masks

Most people don’t realise the sacrifices involved when you choose to be an artist. They seem to believe that artists are very lucky because they have talent and enjoy what they do. This is true, but it is also true that most artists struggle financially and that it takes a lot of discipline and work to acquire certain skills and be good at what you do, just like in any other profession. I try to work every day because painting is like music and dance, if you don't play your instrument or don't practice your steps, you lose it.

I find that the choice of materials is very important. I have stopped using any solvents so that I can work as long as I want without any allergies. I make my own quick drying oil and I take great care in choosing a good linen canvas and soft brushes. Oil paints have always been to me the perfect way to explore the infinite possibilities of colour. I work in a very instinctive way and my palette looks like total chaos, and yet I know exactly what I am doing, I just don't think about it all the time.
